Doing Ethnography

To cover relevant topics that go beyond the regular learning materials, but which do cover topics that are important for the learner to learn culture, specific language uses (such as jargon), and to get acquainted with the same topic from a multimodal approach. The approach we went with was “highly” academic, as it was relevant for the pre-Bachelor students to get acquainted with the possible academic fields they may want to explore in their future career.

Objective od this workshop is to prepare students for the job market, students get the chance to talk about themselves in a ‘job application’ setting, improving their skills to talk about themselves in a professional context, and to prepare for actual job applications in the (near) future.

ELLA – Ethnographic Landscaping

With ELLA—Ethnographic Linguistic Landscaping, Tilburg University’s team experimented with an approach that was quite different from class-based language learning. The students went out onto the streets where they can be found almost everyday, on their way to work, school or friends, and they collected semiotic materials that ‘raised questions’. Either by asking the people related to the semiotic materials, or by looking up information on the Internet, students got to know more about the socio-political history of the area, gained a better understanding of its superdiversity, learned to use the Internet to look up information, and finally wrote their findings down in Dutch. A multimodal approach indeed!
